Live Baccarat for Beginners: Rules, Bets and House Edge

Baccarat is the most popular table at Asian live casinos, and it is also one of the easiest to learn. You do not make decisions about drawing cards; you simply choose which hand you think will win.
How a round works
- You place a bet on Player, Banker or Tie before the timer ends.
- The dealer deals two cards each to the Player and Banker hands.
- A third card may be drawn for either hand according to fixed rules.
- The hand closest to 9 wins.
Card values
- Ace counts as 1.
- 2 to 9 count at face value.
- 10, J, Q and K count as 0.
Only the last digit of a total counts. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5. A two-card total of 8 or 9 is a natural and ends the round immediately.
The third-card rule, simply
You never have to remember it — the dealer applies it automatically — but the basics are:
- The Player hand draws a third card on a total of 0–5 and stands on 6 or 7.
- The Banker's decision depends on its own total and on the Player's third card, following a fixed table.
The three main bets
Banker
Pays even money, minus a commission (traditionally 5%) on wins. Even after commission, it has the lowest house edge of the three bets — about 1.06% in standard eight-deck baccarat.
Player
Pays even money with no commission. The house edge is about 1.24%, so it is a close second.
Tie
Usually pays 8 to 1. It looks tempting, but the house edge is around 14% — many times higher than Banker or Player.
Side bets and no-commission tables
Many live tables offer extras such as Player Pair, Banker Pair, or Dragon Bonus. These pay more but carry a higher house edge than the main bets. No-commission baccarat removes the 5% fee but reduces the payout when Banker wins with a specific total (often 6). Read the payout table on screen before you sit down.
Reading the roadmaps
Live baccarat tables show "roads" — the bead plate, big road and derived roads — tracking past results. They are fun for spotting patterns, but each hand is dealt from a shuffled shoe and past results do not predict the next one.
Beginner strategy
- Stick mainly to Banker or Player.
- Set a loss limit and a win target before you join a table.
- Use a flat stake rather than progression systems that raise bets after losses.
- Remember that live casino play usually earns rebate too.
